NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK: THE MCGREW HOUSE PHOTO EXHIBIT AND SHOW

5/22/2014

This post is brought to you by Eliza, Preserve WV AmeriCorps, serving at the Old Hemlock Foundation.

During their year of service, all AmeriCorps members are required to participate in several volunteer activities not related to their site.  Members team up on volunteer projects.

I teamed up with two other Preserve WV AmeriCorps (Malina, Sami) and two Appalachian Forest Heritage Area (AFHA) AmeriCorps (Julie, Rachel). We all serve at historically significant sites and decided to assist a local historic site as our service project for National Volunteer Week.

McGrew House was built in 1841 by James C. McGrew for his bride. It is located in Kingwood, West Virginia. The McGrew House is being restored and maintained by The Society for the Preservation of McGrew House, Inc. a non-profit organization formed in 1993. The Society is dedicated to making McGrew House a cultural and educational center for all to enjoy.

Submissions for the Annual Photography Contest at the McGrew House
Every year, the McGrew House has a weeklong photo contest and exhibit that is designed to raise funds and engage the community. We helped the Society set-up for the contest and acted as docents during viewing hours. We also helped clean-up after the event.

We had the opportunity to meet new people, learn more about local history, and share ideas with other individuals that worked in similar environments.
