Meet the AmeriCorps: Rebekah

My name is Rebekah Valentine. I am currently serving as a Preserve WV AmeriCorps member at the Waldomore, which is affiliated with the Clarksburg/Harrison County Public Library. During my service year, I will organize and inventory artifacts, create an exhibit, assist with tours, and recruit and train volunteers.

This past spring, I graduated from Wheeling Jesuit University with a B.A. in History and a minor in Theology and Religious Studies. On campus, I was active in the history club and had the opportunity to travel to many destinations in Europe. These trips and my college experience furthered my passion for history, which led me to apply to the Preserve WV AmeriCorps program. Attending a Jesuit University that pushed students to serve and become “men and women for others” motivated me to do a year of service post-graduation. I joined Preserve WV as a way to help my local community and state, but also as a way to gain experience while helping me get one step closer to my dreams of working in the National Archives or the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.

Meet the AmeriCorps: Elizabeth

My name is Elizabeth Satterfield, and I am serving with the West Virginia Association of Museums. I am studying history at West Virginia University, with emphases in historic preservation and West Virginia history. Currently, I am researching Swiss settlement in Randolph County, WV, for my senior capstone in addition to creating an exhibit for WVU’s library based on summer research on the Sunnyside neighborhood of Morgantown

I grew up in rural Taylor County, WV, and have always been interested in local and state history. My parents emphasized the importance of history as we visited sites across West Virginia and often pointed out the many beautiful structures and towns which had fallen into disrepair over the years. As I began to consider a career path after high school, I realized historic preservation fit with my interests and addressed problems I saw in my local community. Once in college, I looked for opportunities to promote history and preservation. I regularly volunteer at the Morgantown History Museum, focusing on inventory and collection management, and have tried my hand at archiving with the Morgantown Historic Landmark Commission.

When I heard about Preserve WV AmeriCorps positions in Morgantown, I quickly applied, hoping to expand my experience and network within the preservation field. I accepted a position with the West Virginia Association of Museums to learn more about the administrative side of museums, how to write grants, and improve my event planning skills. I am also excited to contribute to a stronger museum community within the state through educational workshops and accessible resources. I am looking forward to meeting many new people through the Preserve WV program and participating in service projects across the state.
