Saved West Virginia Endangered Properties

Check out these success stories for West Virginia. These properties were once endangered and have been saved for adaptive re-uses in most cases. Click the photo if you want to read about how the property had been endangered and the progress it made to be saved.

Former Greenbrier County Public Library, Lewisburg (Greenbrier County)

The former Golden Rule building sat vacant and was filled with storage items before being renovated by Woodlands Development Group into affordable housing. Located in Belington (Barbour County).

Former Elkins Coal & Coke Company Building now a restroom facility and trailhead for Deckers Creek Rail Trail. Located in Masontown, Preston County.

This old Esso Service Station in Fayetteville was saved by local residents who have converted into a restaurant. (Located in Fayette County).

The old Glen Jean School was purchased in 2017 by ROYAL Corporation. They have turned the school into a faith-based, action sports facility for youth.

This Sears Kit Home known as "The Westly" was saved in March 2021 when a local Lewisburg resident purchased the building and moved it to a new location.

The Ananias Pitsbenbarger Farmstead in Pendleton County has been transformed to Loafer's Glory - an AirBnB and event venue.

Charles Washington's Happy Retreat is currently being rehabilitated by a community-based nonprofit organization. It is saved and used as a community event space.

The Cass Historic District was one of the first West Virginia Endangered Properties ever identified by PAWV. It has been incorporated into a successful state - Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.

The First Ward School (located in Elkins, Randolph County) is a successful example of adaptive reuse, having been converted into the First Ward School Apartments – an apartment community for low-income seniors. The building has been renovated with many modern conveniences.

The McCreery Hotel in Hinton (Summers County) was added to the WV Endangered Properties List in 2009. It has been transformed into an events and conference center by MountainPlex Properties.

The Hawks Nest CCC Museum in Ansted is being repurposed as an event venue with new restrooms, dressing rooms, and catering kitchen. The rehabilitation included the restoration of the connection between the original entry and museum The venue and site were made fully accessible and a new parking lot was added. The project was funded by Department of Natural Resources and is scheduled to be completed by July 2021.
