St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Weston (Lewis County)
PAWV gave a grant to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Weston to create a maintenance plan checklist for each season and a historic building conditions report.

Mary Mazza Hendricks, Secretary to the Rector Rev. John C. Valentine wrote: “With a 125-year old building and a rich history, our parish was concerned about maintaining both. . . PAWV partnered St. Paul’s with the Mills Group who did a site assessment that is a masterpiece. . . Their final report answers every question about what the building needs, how and when to maintain it, with recommendations about whom to call for the issues that need attention. . . We highly recommend the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia to any organization that needs historic preservation assistance.”

Sweet Springs Resort Pool House (Monroe County)
PAWV gave a grant to the Sweet Springs Resort Park Foundation in Monroe County to create stabilization plans for the historic pool house, part of the c. 1760 property listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The foundation needed these plans to understand the necessary stabilization measures that will be needed to restore the property for a future reopening as a multi-use facility. Watch the project overview video here.

Pocahontas County Opera House, Marlinton (Pocahontas County)
The Opera House is the premier performing arts venue in Pocahontas County. It is an events venue and after-school and summer programming center for local students. The building is historic and was constructed using unique materials. In January, we noticed the upper corner of the building near the roof started to fail. PAWV worked with a specialist to conduct a mortar analysis for the building and determine the specific mixture for repairing this structure.

"The opportunity to have experts assist in the preservation of the Opera House through the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia is incredibly helpful in a remote area like Marlinton, West Virginia. After this project and because of the help from PAWV, we will have a more intricate knowledge of the building materials used in the historic structure, and we will be able to make better, long-lasting repairs than before the mortar analysis. This means that we will be able to continue to offer our programming while also preserving the Opera House for both our current audience AND their grandchildren--not just the former." - Marilyn Creager, former Preserve WV AmeriCorps member assigned to the Opera House

Historic Bank Building, Alderson (Greenbrier County)
PAWV gave funds to Alderson Renaissance, a non-profit organization that owns the historic bank building in a National Register Historic District in downtown Alderson, which has a commercial space on the bottom floor and residential units on the upper floors. Grant funds are being used for a Priorities & Periodic Maintenance Analysis - a report that identifies current issues and future maintenance issues/items. The final report will include a priority listing of items for future budgeting and planning.

Fairview Church, Webster Springs (Webster County)
The Fairview Church in Webster Springs is not currently being used. A local resident came to PAWV looking for help to understand what is needed to repair the building and save it for a new use. Consultants are preparing plans on how to address the building’s settlement issues, such as installing new foundation piers for the wall supports, re-aligning the walls that are now out of plumb and repairing some damaged beams.  They also are providing some general information on window repairs, roof repair/replacements, and some items noted on the exterior such as the cupola/bell tower.

First Zion Baptist Church, Harpers Ferry (Jefferson County)
The First Zion Baptist Church is a historically Black Church located in the Harpers Ferry National Register Historic District. It is currently owned by the Harpers Ferry-Bolivar Historic Town Foundation - an organization wanting to repurpose the building for a new community use. PAWV funded a lead paint assessment and remediation plan through its grant fund, and then it partnered with the Foundation to apply for a West Virginia Brownfields FOCUS grant for an asbestos test and remediation plan. PAWV also provided a loan to the Foundation to refinance its mortgage. The revolving loan funds were made possible through a 1772 Foundation Grant.

The home of George and Kay Evans now owned by the Old Hemlock Foundation, Bruceton Mills (Preston County)
PAWV provided a grant to the Old Hemlock Foundation in Bruceton Mills to partner with Smith Family of Workshops to offer a historic wood windows workshop.

LeJay Graffious, Director of the Old Hemlock Foundation said:
"The workshop led by experts in the field included Alliance personnel, AmeriCorps members, foundation director and local craftsmen.   The addition of the local craftsmen was particularly important to the foundation because it developed a local resource, which I can depend on, plus including local craftsmen helped build the capacity for other historic sites to have trained, skilled craftsmen in the area to call on for projects.  I enthusiastically support the work of the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia and value their work to support technical support for history organizations throughout West Virginia charged with maintaining structures and history of their charge. "
