A GUN, AN INTEREST, AND TIME ENOUGH

10/3/2016

By Ian Gray

My first real recollection of being enthralled with Civil War history came with a book brought back for me by my father on a return from a business trip when I was still in middle school.  I can remember pouring over the maps and battle illustrations for hours on end and being instantly hooked on the history covering the pages.  A few years, and two degrees, later that interest has yet to leave and when the opportunity presented itself to once again engross myself in the history at my time at Old Hemlock I eagerly dived in.  For decades, an 1860 model colt army revolver hung over the studio fireplace, and still rests in the foundation’s possession, at Old Hemlock and immediately stuck out as a potential research project.  While the subsequent endeavor has revealed little about the revolver itself (fire destroyed the Colt archives for this particular model), the journey has uncovered rich material about the Civil War ancestry of George Bird and Kay Harris Evans (Old Hemlock’s commemorated historical figures) and revealed the tale of how the Old Hemlock’s existence was almost snuffed out decades before it began.

A CITIZEN CELEBRATION

10/1/2016

By Brenna Craig

Main Street Fairmont hosted a “Citizen Building Celebration” on Thursday, August 11, 2016, in honor of the successful revitalization of the historic Citizen’s Building in downtown Fairmont.

Located in the heart of downtown, across the street from the beautiful Marion County Courthouse on Adams Street, the Citizen Building, was originally built as two storefronts in the 1880s. As one of the oldest buildings in town the building was surprisingly not listed on the National Register as an individual structure. Over the last two years Preserve WV AmeriCorps members Robert Wolfe and Brenna Craig contributing to the project by completing numerous behind-the-scenes tasks, such as section 106 review, promotion, marketing, and finally the renting of the building.
