Lewisburg is a textbook example of a town rescuing itself through an
impressive effort in historic preservation economic development. The
establishment of a historic district in 1978, followed by the enactment of a
new city code protecting identified historic resources and requiring
comprehensive design review by the Historic Landmarks Commission, are well
recognized to have made Lewisburg’s recent business and lifestyle achievements
possible. In 24 years Lewisburg has gone from a little-visited, ordinary town
to a town with such recognized tourism stature that it secured a place in
National Geographic’s recent book touting the 75 best American small towns to
visit. What’s more, Lewisburg’s leaders believe that the formula can work and
achieve similar positive results in many other West Virginia towns.
Look forward to an exciting conference program of tours, activities,
celebrating success stories, demonstrating economic benefits, and providing
proven preservation tools you can use in your community. The exact date will
be set as soon as reservations can be confirmed, and will appear on the PAWV
web page, and in our next mailing. See you there!
