Heritage Tourism at Annual Conference September 6 & 7 in Morgantown

   

Reserve your calendar for the PAWV 2002 Annual Conference -- Heritage Tourism for West Virginia, to be held September 6 & 7 in Morgantown. The Conference will showcase the successful PAWV Heritage Tourism grant project including the Frontiers to Mountaineers pilot region, preview the new West Virginia statewide Heritage Tourism program being developed with PAWV leadership and the WV Development Office, and provide hands-on training and encouragement to communities, sites, and regions who are working on heritage tourism development.
The leadoff session on Friday afternoon will feature luncheon and keynote speaker in the Clarion Hotel Morgan Ballroom, and will showcase national and regional heritage tourism success stories. Friday will also feature tours of heritage sites in and around Morgantown, and an evening reception.
Our keynote speaker for the conference will be Tom Moriarity from Economic Research Associates, who will offer exciting insights on benefits and best practices in Heritage Tourism. Mr. Moriarity is a frequent speaker on historic preservation planning, retail and transportation center planning and downtown development issues at conferences, colleges and universities. He has a background in commercial area management, downtown revitalization strategies, retail programming and historic preservation. One of his current projects involves heritage tourism strategies for eighteen historic sites of the Alabama Historical Commission. Mr. Moriarity holds degrees in architecture from the University of Texas at Austin, and was a founder of the National Main Street Center in the National Trust for Historic Preservation
Saturday will be full of educational and useful workshop sessions, with three concurrent tracks to choose from - Preserving for Tourism; Interpretation; and Business of Heritage Tourism. Lunch Saturday and the PAWV Annual Meeting
will also be included.
