PAWV Offers Historic Wood Window Restoration Workshops
PAWV now offers historic wooden windows restoration workshops instructed by Lynn Stasick, PAWV field representative, and Phil Davis, of Allegheny Restoration.  These one- and/or two-day historic preservation methodology workshops inform the attending public regarding the best practices for the rehabilitation of historic wooden windows.  A PowerPoint presentation followed by a hands-on demonstration conducted by two professional provides a visual picture of the processes involved to rehabilitate a window to Class Two condition as stipulated in the National Park Service Preservation Brief #9.  During the demonstration, people are encouraged to gather around and ask questions.  The experts will also demonstrate how to weatherize windows unobtrusively, using modern insulating materials.  In addition, an oral preservation is offered in an attempt to clarify some of the on-going debate regarding the rehabilitation and preservation of historic wooden windows versus the installation of modern replac

Historic preservation steam chests are also employed for safer and quicker removal of window paint and glazing. The steam chest is a valuable tool in the restoration of historic wooden windows. It not only allows for a minimum of glass breakage, but provides an efficient way to restore the sash units overall. The PAWV Steam Chest Workshop and Power Point Presentation offers instructions which enable people to build a simple, efficient, cost-effective unit for use in their communities. It is a collapsible affair that can be easily stored. A finished chest ready for use is constructed during the workshop.

More than its usefulness, ease of construction, and affordability however, this workshop and unit offer people the opportunity to appreciate and take part in the saving and restoration of their own historic wooden windows and ultimately their community history.

For more information about rates and to schedule a workshop please contact PAWV at info@pawv.org or call 304.685.8119.   Visit PAWV's website to read about why you should save your historic wooden windows.

Independence Hall Restoration Almost Complete!
The birthplace of West Virginia's statehood has received a make-over.  WV's Independence Hall has undergone an extensive restoration project that is nearing completion.  Located in downtown Wheeling, the third-floor courtroom of the famed building has been restored to its 19th century condition, and it looks as close as possible to the way it did in 1859.

Over almost five months, John Canning and his team from Cheshire, Connecticut, led the restoration project. Phases of the project included the initial investigation of paint chips through electrical analysis to determine the original colors of the courtroom and the perusal of 19th century drawings.  Canning employed the French painting technique trompe I'oeil (meaning "to fool the eye") to accentuate the flat surfaces thusgiving a three-dimensional appearance with the illusions of shadows being cast.

A public ceremony to unveil the courtroom is scheduled for 2 p.m. on January 29th with a reception to follow.  For more information, see the website and be sure to make a visit to this special site during the up-coming years to commemorate the (almost) 150th anniversary of WV's statehood and the Civil War.
