Nominating Your Site for the PAWV Endangered List

Each year, PAWV adds to its Endangered Properties List, a collection of historic structures, buildings, and sites that are threatened by demolition and/or disuse. Such threats jeopardize our historic and cultural built environment, in addition to the destruction of frequently salvageable construction materials. There are several degrees of endangerment, including neglect, proposed demolition, rezoning or redevelopment, and other human and/or environmental factors.

If you know of a historic property in your community that fits this description, please consider nominating it to the Endangered Properties List. Eligible properties must be listed on or eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and those eligible must complete the West Virginia Historic Properties Inventory form through the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office.

Decisions for the yearly list are generally made in December of the preceding year by PAWV staff and the Board of Directors. Nominations are accepted until November 15th of the current year, and these submissions will be considered for the following year’s list. Additions to the Endangered Properties List are announced at History Day every February at the State Capitol Complex in Charleston, where property nominators and preservation supporters are invited to attend a press conference and advocate with PAWV for historic preservation.

PAWV aims to serve the stewards of endangered properties by helping with the identification of adaptive uses for each and providing technical historic preservation assistance, in addition to supporting project efforts through publicity, advocacy, and educational pamphlets. For questions and to submit a nomination for a compromised historic property, please contact Danielle LaPresta at dlapresta@pawv.org or at 304.345.6005.
