Preservation Alliance of West Virginia is accepting
application for historic and endangered properties
to be nominated for the 2011 West Virginia
Endangered Properties List. Through the listing PAWV
promotes awareness of the plight of these historic
properties and provides direct assistance toward
their preservation. The deadline for submission is
November 1, 2010. (NOTE: This deadline
has been extended for one week until November 8,
2010.) Applications are available
HERE (as an MS Word Document) and
HERE (as a PDF file) or by calling the PAWV
office at 304-345-6005.
Thanks to a National
Trust for Historic Preservation challenge grant and
the support of generous donors who have answered
that challenge, PAWV field representative and
historic preservationist Lynn Stasick is available
to help the Endangered Properties. Stasick explains
“I work with each property and each community in an
effort to rehabilitate and adaptively re-use these
unique and historic sites.” In addition to an
assessment of each property, Stasick helps with
raising public awareness, building local support,
capacity building, and providing preservation
expertise to assist with local preservation efforts.
Endangered historic properties lists have been
used by preservation organizations for many years to
bring attention to the plight of endangered sites
and to provide assistance to the gallant
organizations involved in their preservation. The
PAWV list is competitively selected, and properties
must meet criteria such as historic significance,
geographic location, preservation emergency, and
local support. Significance is determined by being
listed or eligible for listing on the National
Register of Historic Places.
With new
properties accepted annually, PAWVs Endangered List
helps focus attention on these significant historic
properties statewide. Nominations are accepted each
fall for the following year’s list. Preservation
Alliance of West Virginia is the statewide
grassroots organization for historic preservation.
