The state of West Virginia benefited from a number of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs. These programs included the National Youth Administration, the Works Progress Administration, and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
While providing paying work for unemployed citizens and supplying much needed economic relief to hard-hit areas, New Deal projects resulted in lasting contributions to West Virginia towns in the form of infrastructure, architecture and art. Federal projects also underwrote work by skilled writers, photographers and filmmakers upon subjects of public interest.
Some projects were specific to a region or town, but many projects had state-wide benefits. Nine Community sites, thirteen sites in WV state parks or forests and ten sites in the Monongahela National Forest have been identified as significant New Deal/CCC resources that might also be developed for heritage tourism.
